Project summary
Design and launch of the Action Plan for Biodiversity Management on the Boto concession site (IAMGOLD BOTO S.A). This action plan focuses on the conservation of the West African chimpanzee species (Pan troglodytes verus), the only species that induces the notion of critical habitat with regard to the SFI performance standards followed by the mining company.
Special attention was also paid to the presence of amphibious hippopotamus on the banks of the Falémé River. This action plan was designed to cover a 25-year period (revised every five years). It integrates all of the intervention axes and conditions for the proper conservation of the species and their habitats, with the notions of information/awareness/ protection/ management/monitoring/economic development and community inclusion/review of local governance and stakeholder involvement. A reforestation/reforestation component was developed to ensure the ecological continuity of critical environments. The conservation area was defined and mapped according to the different levels of effort required for the habitats concerned.
The implementation was initiated by the presentation and validation of the plan by the communities and stakeholders involved, in order to launch the process of classification of the forest space to be conserved.
