Behavioral analysis of Guinea baboons at the Sabodala site

  • Name of the project : Behavioral analysis of Guinea baboons at the Sabodala site
  • Client : Sabodala Gold Operation – ENDEAVOUR
  • place : Senegal

Project summary

Environmental technical assistance provided to the Sabodala Gold Operation (SGO-ENDEAVOUR) for the proper management of issues related to the behavior of Guinea baboons on the production plant site (approximately 700 individuals).

First, an inventory was conducted within the mine to characterize the management of proximity with the baboon families (sorting and management of food waste, evolution of the number of baboons in the dormitory, state of cohabitation between baboons and SGO personnel and baboons and local populations). A behavioral analysis of the Guinea baboons was then conducted. In addition to the scientific analysis, field surveys and interviews were conducted, resulting in a set of recommendations for the implementation of an operational action plan, with several scenarios including the management or relocation of the main baboon dormitory at the mine site.

Finally, training in wildlife counting methods was provided to SGO's environmental teams (classroom training on ecological monitoring and animal population counting methods, practical exercise in situ over several days to count the Baboon population in the main dormitory, and counting by age class and sex).
